To mark 30 years since the death of P.L. Travers, Elisabeth Galvin discusses her latest biography, The Author of Mary Poppins: The Unknown Story of P.L. Travers.
Drawing on new source material and interviews with Travers’ family and friends, including her daughter-in-law, granddaughter and best friend of 30 years, the book offers a fresh perspective on the extraordinary and complex author behind Mary Poppins.
Born Helen Lyndon Goff in Queensland, Australia, P.L. Travers carefully guarded her identity throughout her life, using multiple names and keeping her Australian origins largely hidden until just two years before her death. Elisabeth’s biography explores the life of the elusive writer behind a publishing phenomenon of eight books written across 55 years and translated into 20 languages, revealing a woman whose remarkable experiences took her from Russia and New York to Arizona and Kyoto.
