About the presentation

During late 2023, Philippa Stevens visited 24 libraries and archives across nine countries and concentrated for eight weeks on the research topic of collection security. This experience of a lifetime was made possible by Philippa being awarded a Churchill Fellowship.

The funding she received with the Fellowship made it possible for Philippa to visit some of the world’s most famous libraries and archives where she explored a range of topics from a list of about 60 questions. She focused on all aspects of collection security including what happens in the reading room as well as behind the scenes in the library.

Philippa will talk about her research and subsequent report titled “To benchmark the balance of access, security and preservation for significant library collections.” She will also speak more broadly about the opportunities possible with a Churchill Fellowship. A key difference of this Fellowship to some others is that it is not for academic studies, and it is open to every Australian.

About the speaker

Philippa began her professional library career at the University of Sydney. She eventually progressed to the position of Manager, Fisher Library, where she oversaw the operation of the largest and busiest library in the network. Philippa loved working with students to help improve their research skills and she pioneered various innovations in her practice of teaching information literacy.

In 2012, she moved to the State Library of New South Wales where she was responsible for the operation of the reading rooms for ten years. This included the Special Collections Desk where high value and original material is accessed. Philippa greatly enjoyed being exposed to the marvels and mysteries of the library’s amazing collections and the idea for her research project began at that desk.

In 2022, Philippa left the State Library and moved to the Southern Highlands. She recently presented a brief report about her collection security research at the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) conference. She hopes to build capacity around collection security in Australian libraries.
