Friends of Wingecarribee Libraries present November 2024 Author Talk Kylie Needham in conversation with Lynette Ainsworth
About the book
Girl in a Pink Dress began as a short story inspired by the historic goldrush town of Hill End, the church studio of Kylie’s friend, landscape artist Luke Sciberras, and countless real-life stories of underacknowledged female painters of the 20th century, such as Clarice Beckett. After receiving encouragement from Writer Richard Flanagan she developed her short story into a debut novel. Without this encouragement, she doubts the book would exist.
The story weaves between past and present, and is a sharp-eyed and compelling story of a woman’s transformation from muse to professional painter. It explores ideas of power and privilege, rivalry and desire, and asks if it is possible for one relationship to survive two ambitious artists.
‘Needham's book is exquisite and fierce and beautifully observed. I was immersed from the first page to the last... A bravura piece of work.’
Anna Funder, The Sydney Morning Herald
